Global fund for the Multilateral Mechanism for the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits from the Use of Digital Sequence Information on Genetic Resources (DSI).
The Cali Fund ushers in a new era for biodiversity finance. Companies making commercial use of data from genetic resources in nature in a range of lucrative industries are now expected to contribute to the Fund. The Cali Fund will mobilize new streams of funding for biodiversity action worldwide, distributing these funds to developing countries as well as indigenous peoples and local communities. Adopted by 196 Parties, the Cali Fund is the financial arm of the multilateral mechanism for benefit sharing from the use of Digital Sequence Information on genetic resources (DSI).
50% of the funds to empower those who protect nature
At least half of the funds will be directed to indigenous peoples and local communities in both developing and developed countries, to support their self-identified needs.
As private companies use genetic data to drive products, the Cali Fund ensures fair benefit-sharing so developing countries and indigenous peoples and local communities are not left behind.
